How to Turn on Background Captions

Keep your captions running even when you switch to another app.

Background Captions

With Background Captions turned on, your captions keep going in a small window on your screen - so you can check a text, look something up, or do anything else on your phone, all while staying on your call!

How to Turn On Background Captions:

  1. Open the Rylo app

  2. Tap Settings > Call Preferences

  3. Toggle on "Captions in Picture-in-Picture"

If you're on iPhone - one extra step: Go to your iPhone Settings > General > Picture in Picture and make sure Start PiP Automatically is turned ON. This step is easy to miss - if it's off, the floating caption window won't appear.

How to use it

  1. Start or answer a Rylo call

  2. Switch to another app, or go to your home screen

  3. The floating caption window appears automatically, and your captions keep going

That's it! The next time you switch apps during a call, your captions will follow you in a small window on your screen.

What if I see a "Tap here for captions" banner instead? (iOS)

Sometimes the floating window can't start. When that happens, you'll see a Tap here for captions banner instead. Tap the banner to return to the Rylo app - your captions will continue there in full screen. If you keep seeing the banner instead of the floating window, try these steps:

  1. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Picture in Picture and check that Start PiP Automatically is turned ON

  2. In the Rylo app, check that Captions in Picture-in-Picture is turned on

  3. Update Rylo to the latest version

  4. Restart your phone
